Swimming back to La Jolla Shores one chilly morning, the sunrise bathed everything in pink and purple. We swam by a flock of pelicans relaxing in the shallows and they moved over barely enough for us to go by. As I took a breath to the west, two pelicans floated peacefully in front of a dusty pink sky, and I knew I needed to paint that image.

After a swim at La Jolla Shores, CA, I happened upon a piece of rubber on the ground that reminded me of a whale eye. Taking it home, I envisioned meeting a whale close enough to look it in the eye. What would I see? Everything, I decided. Whales to me signify wisdom, peace, and power. Their souls hold the earth and all its oceans.
24” x 18” mixed media on canvas. Weighs 5.2 lbs. Materials: clay, joint compound, rocks, shells, resin, and acrylic paint.
The much misunderstood oarfish shows off her floral body markings in shimmering blues, pinks, and purples. Dazzling against the darkness of the deep ocean, she is a sight to behold.
